Tick Bites and Meat Allergies: What You Need to Know to Keep Your Family and Pets Safe

You’ve probably never heard of a tick bite making someone allergic to meat. It does sound unbelievable, but it is very real and increasingly common due to the lone star tick. Some aggressive little arachnids are spreading all over the United States, bringing with them the risk of alpha gal syndrome, a condition that could turn you red meat allergic. Let’s dive into what this means for you, your family, and even your pets.

First off, what is alpha gal syndrome? Alpha gal syndrome is, basically, the allergy to the sugar molecule found in red meat that triggers an allergic reaction. But here is the catch it doesn’t directly show up, really. Their manifestations, like hives, nausea, vomiting, and very bad stomach pains, come a little late, two to six hours right after one has ingested red meat. One study approximated that, in the U.S. from 2010 to 2022, there were more than 110,000 cases of suspected AGS, though that number could also be as high as 450,000.

But how does the tick do it? It’s the lone star tick the one with the white dot on his back. A chomp from this little guy could spur such a powerful immune response that starts producing renal antibodies to alpha gal. The next time you eat red meat, your body believes it is being invaded and it sends out chemicals to defend you, which in turn causes an allergy. The CDC says that while the lone star tick used to be found mainly in the southeastern part of the U.S., due to climate change and the fact the warm seasons are lasting now longer, the reports are now getting to other parts of the country.

So, what can you do to protect yourself and your loved ones? Here are some tips:

Use Bug Deterrents: The CDC recommends using bug sprays registered with the Environmental Protection Agency. Products that contain DEET, picaridin, or even oil of lemon eucalyptus seem to work really well. You can also treat your clothing with permethrin products, which can repel ticks.

Be Vigilant in Tick Prone Areas: Dense woods and grassy areas are favored by the lone star tick, including your own backyard. Any time you go out hiking or even just play in your yard, do regular tick checks.

Know the Symptoms: AGS isn’t the only malady that can be spread by lone star ticks. They also harbor Heartland virus and tularemia, both of which bear serious complications. The symptoms of Heartland virus are a high temperature and nausea, and tularemia could be deadly if treated late.

Educate and Communicate: If you think that you may have AGS, see an allergist. As Dr. Ann Carpenter puts it, “It’s critical for clinicians to be aware of AGS so they can properly evaluate, diagnose, and manage their patients and also educate them on tick bite prevention to protect patients from developing this allergic condition.” Your allergist will probably perform a blood test to confirm if you have antibodies specific to alpha gal.

Stay Safe: If diagnosed with AGS, avoid red meat. That means becoming an avid label reader and inquiring about food preparation when eating out. Having an epheprine injector on hand at all times is very prudent.

Pets Will Be Affected Too: With less information on alpha gal syndrome in pets, it is anecdotal that they can also become victims of tick bites. Check your pets regularly for ticks and treat them with tick prevention measures as advised by your vet.

While such conditions will have a very pointed impact, personal stories let on that they are real. Imagine this You were a father who loved barbecuing steaks for your family until one day you realized that your child had developed a very serious allergy to red meat. Family barbecues suddenly gave way to visits to the hospital. That is how life changing AGS can be.

Finally, here are some tips to help make your surroundings more tick safe. Keeping your house yard mowing lawn and removing leaf litter helps with environmental management. If possible, install a fence to keep deer out of the yard deer transport ticks into yards.

While it can be a little unnerving to think something as minute as a tick can cause so serious health problems, rest assured there is much to be gained by being informed and prepared. Be vigilant, use preventative measures, and inform yourself and your family of the risk factors and warning signs. In this way, you will be able to venture outdoors with far greater feelings, knowing that you are taking proper care of those near and dear to you.

Remember, ticks may be tiny, but the problems they cause can be huge. Stay safe and stay informed!
