Vote Now: Which Icon Tops Florida’s Fame List?

Some states have state birds. Florida? It has a state of fame. Endowed with sun-kissed beaches and neon-filled stages, the Sunshine State has long been the destination of choice for the rich, the talented, and the outrageous. But here’s the question that’s been fueling good-natured debate from Miami to Pensacola: who is the most famous Floridian of them all?

The search has been narrowed down to ten names after weeks of public voting. The category is as eclectically Floridian as the state four musicians, an actor, an inventor, two golfers, and a Heisman winner. As of September 17, late Jimmy Buffett tops the list, followed closely by Tom Petty and Burt Reynolds. The competition has been intense, with rounds cutting down global icons such as Lionel Messi, Venus and Serena Williams, Ariana Grande, Pitbull, Hulk Hogan, and even Henry Ford.

Florida’s cultural charm is impossible to deny. Some of the contenders were indeed born there, but others simply couldn’t help but make it their own. The mild climate, the hippie ethos, and the no-state-income-tax incentive have been magnets for celebrities from all walks of life for decades. But the story behind each of the contenders is not so much about popularity as it is a love letter to the impact that Florida has had on American culture.

Jimmy Buffett’s own legacy is woven into the fabric of coast life. A year after his passing, cities from Delray Beach to Key West have commemorated his life with music, margaritas, and warm remembrances. Florida went so far as to christen its famous A1A “Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway” from Key West to the border of Georgia. They call him “the go-to for relaxation” and a man who asked us all to live life to the fullest, be ourselves, and “definitely not take life too seriously.” His Margaritaville brand is not a business empire rather a state of mind that Floridians and fans worldwide still cling to.

Tom Petty’s tale is also steeped in Florida soil. Raised in Gainesville, he sold more than 80 million records and left his mark on rock legend. His songs frequently nodded to his native state, from homesick odes to Gainesville to allusions to the orange groves of Orlando. Other than the singles, Petty was a defender of artistic integrity most famously declaring bankruptcy to resist a record label takeover, not wanting to be “bought and sold like a piece of meat.” His wager on the album Damn the Torpedoes paid off with triple platinum, and his work with legends such as Bob Dylan and George Harrison demonstrated his ability at collaborative creativity. Even now, his legacy continues in the Tom Petty Endowment for Guitars and Innovation, which encourages new generations of musicians.

And don’t forget Burt Reynolds, whose acting career was as tied to Florida as that iconic mustache. Born in Palm Beach County, he went from being a football star at his local high school to Hollywood’s leading box office attraction for five consecutive years. His majority of films Smokey and the Bandit II, Stick, The Crew-were shot in Florida, putting the state’s landscape in the international spotlight. Off-screen, he promoted local arts by running the Burt Reynolds Jupiter Dinner Theater and even donated his helicopter to environmentally friendly causes. As Dolly Parton said of him, “We will always remember his funny laugh, that mischievous sparkle in his eyes, and his quirky sense of humor.”

The general terms of the survey natives, snowbirds, and culture creators are what define celebrity culture in the state. It’s where Ernest Hemingway penned classics in Key West, Walt Disney created an empire, and sports legends like Dan Marino and Chris Evert established their legacy. Even the early-out-of-bounds such as Zora Neale Hurston or Kelly Slater attest to how rich the pool of talent is.

And now it’s up to the public to choose which five names will move on to the final round. Voting for this round closes at 11:59 p.m. ET on Sunday, September 21, with the final face-off getting underway September 24. Whether your choice is a beach-bum troubadour, a rock-and-roll renegade, or a silver-screen legend, your vote contributes to the narrative of Florida’s cultural heritage.

For in a country where celebrity is as common as sunlight, the true winner is the one who wins the affection of the people.
