That’s the taste of the most recent cosmic controversy, as Harvard-educated astrophysicist Dr. Willie Soon has dished up a potent combination of tough math, fine-tuning theory, and a dash of satire to make the case that the precision of the universe points directly to God. And, sure enough, there’s a burrito on the plate.

Soon’s beginning point is the fine-tuning argument the notion that the physical constants of the universe are so finely tuned that a fractionally smaller adjustment would render life impossible. Imagine gravity: alter its force by a fraction of a percentage and either everything collapses into a cosmic pancake or floats apart into a cold, dark void. As Nobel Prize winner Steven Weinberg once wrote, “Life as we know it would be impossible if any one of several physical quantities had slightly different values.” Not just poetry it’s science. The creation of carbon in the stars, the stability of DNA, even the mass ratio of protons and electrons all must be “just right” for life to be possible.
Soon takes that precision and, taking a cue from physicist Paul Dirac’s equations, appends what he refers to as a “God term.” His tongue-in-cheek spin? The variable “G” might be quantified in clap emojis from YouTube comments. Studies of science communication reveal that satire and whimsical metaphors can engage audiences that otherwise might just scroll by. The burrito gag is effective because it leverages what humor theorists refer to as incongruity putting two concepts together that don’t typically blend, such as cosmology and Tex-Mex. Research has determined that when scientists employ humorous analogies or anthropomorphic humor, audiences respond with increased engagement and even perceive the communicator as more pleasant and credible.
