Gas Prices Fall to $2.89, Lowest December Level Since 2020

For the holidays this year, travelers are seeing a pleasant surprise at the pump: the national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline has dropped to $2.89-a low for December not seen since 2020, according to AAA. That’s down despite a seasonal demand spike with millions of Americans hitting the road, a sign of how favorable global oil market dynamics are to consumers right now.

The oversupply of crude oil, according to industry analysts, was the main force behind the decline. “significant oversupply of crude oil driving prices below $60 per barrel,” Lipow Oil Associates president Andy Lipow told CNBC. U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate is trading near $56.55 a barrel, while international benchmark Brent crude sits at $59.82 per barrel. This is well below the $81 Brent averaged in 2024. Forecasts from the U.S. Energy Information Administration show Brent will fall further, down to $55 a barrel in 2026.

The cheapest gasoline in the nation is currently available in Oklahoma at $2.34 per gallon, closely followed by Arkansas at $2.46, Iowa at $2.47, Colorado at $2.49, and Wisconsin at $2.51. On the other end of the scale, Hawaii drivers are paying $4.43 a gallon, while California is at $4.33. Often, wide regional differences in prices reflect transportation costs, state taxes, and local supply constraints, but the overarching national trend is downward.

Crude oil prices typically account for around half of the retail gasoline price, and the current surplus is being fueled by near-record production from the United States, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, and Guyana. These non-OPEC+ producers are adding barrels at a pace that offsets cartel restraint, reshaping the global oil supply map. Brazil’s offshore pre-salt fields and Guyana’s rapidly expanding output are delivering structural, low-cost supply that is largely immune to OPEC+ coordination.

OPEC+, the block of oil-producing countries that has traditionally controlled prices through cuts in production, responded to oversupply by stopping the return of additional barrels back to the market starting January 2026. Lipow said, “In fact, these lower prices have forced OPEC+ to rethink their strategy.” The pause reflects a strategic effort to stabilize prices, but analysts from multiple agencies suggest the cartel’s influence is waning as non-OPEC+ supply growth persists.

The EIA’s November Short-Term Energy Outlook projects the U.S. retail gasoline price will average $3.00 per gallon in 2026, down from $3.10 in 2025. The agency also projects U.S. crude oil production to hold near record highs of 13.6 million barrels per day through 2026 with crude oil’s share of gasoline prices falling to 43% as oil prices fall. Global petroleum inventories are projected to build by an average of 2.6 million barrels per day in late 2025, putting downward pressure on prices into the following year.

Seasonal patterns also play a role. Traditionally, U.S. gasoline prices peak in late summer as Americans drive more and are forced to switch to pricier summer-blend fuel, then move lower during winter months when demand slackens. The current December drop aligns with that seasonal pattern but is amplified by the unusually strong supply situation. According to EIA, from 2004 through 2023, August prices averaged about 40 cents per gallon higher than January prices-a gap which could widen if winter oversupply persists.

With an abundance of supply, seasonal demand easing, and low crude benchmarks, travelers and commuters can look forward to relatively affordable holiday travel. Market watchers see something more significant: the structural shift that has made surpluses, instead of shortages, the base risk in the oil market. In this environment, energy companies are paying greater attention to stabilizing cash flow rather than pursuing aggressive production growth-a cautious move on their part, for a world where the OPEC+ group is no longer the undisputed architect of global oil pricing.
