It was an ordinary morning to mom Tori McKee 33, who looked at the baby monitor to know whether Carolina was awake. She was. But it was not an ordinary scene and there right beside her daughter in the crib was Poppy, the loving cat in the family. The previous night, the house had been full of noise and children at a holiday party. Carolina had her night light switched off somewhere in the confusion and as a result, her room was dark. Poppy had been able to slip in unnoticed by McKee and when the door was closed the cat was locked up overnight.

The couple appeared entirely relaxed on the baby monitor, lying in a heap, periodically changing their positions into more comfortable ones. McKee said that “Poppy is the sweetest cat in the whole world”. “She loves all our children, but Carolina is the only one of them we’ve brought home as a newborn since we’ve had Poppy”. The latter was evident in the footage, which McKee eventually shared on Tik Tok (itstorimckee), and in which he jokingly said it was the best night of the life of Poppy.

The caption on the video provided that there were a number of biscuits that Poppy made, a stanza to the rhythmic kneading of cats when they are happy. Viewers couldn’t get enough. Within a few days, the clip received over 775,000 views, 92,500 likes and 430 comments. The friendship of the two was celebrated by many and others jokingly threatened that Poppy could now be invited to receive cribs every night. One of the commenters joked, it is indeed very dangerous, they are going to be best friends and they will never sleep alone any more. Another Poppy called her a personal night nanny.

In addition to adorable scenes, such scenes like these show the profound psychological gains pets can have against small children. Studies have demonstrated that early attachments to animals can be empowering in terms of empathy, anxiety and a feeling of security. The presence of the pet can also aid in the area of calming down the emotions of a child and in the case of Carolina it might have even helped her to sleep better. Her daughter who is an otherwise fussy sleeper, according to McKee, slept the whole night and did not open her eyes till 10 a.m. a personal record.

This subdued magic is echoed in the stories of other families. In one of the viral stories, a Weimaraner dog named Frank became very attached to a small girl called Halle after her parents spent time training him to welcome her into the house. They involved him in the preparations of nursery, introduced baby sounds, and established strict limits, which build the relationship based on trust and respect. These deliberate actions will do good in making sure that there is a sense of safety and peace when pets and young children are present together.

Naturally, the safety is also considered. Professionals recommend the regulation of the contact between children and pets and particularly sleeping habits. Although most pets are usually docile, they may accidentally become hazardous, e.g. they may block the breathing air and may startle a child. By establishing protective bonding spaces such as day time cuddles or guided play the relationship can thrive without undermining wellbeing.

Nevertheless, the emotional effect of such attachments cannot be denied. Such videos as Carolina and Poppy remind the audience about the silent, unspoken manner that animals incorporate into family life. It could be a cat lying next to a crib or a dog tolerantly listening to a toddler during a pretend spa day; these are the things that provide comfort and happiness to the world that seems rushed.

To McKee, one more detail of the heartwarming nature came in the morning after the sleepover. When she took Carolina out of the crib, the toddler went up to Poppy and just said, “tat”, her name for cat. It was a little thing, yet one that summed up the spirit of their union: pure, simple, and straight-forward as it was.
