Skip rent without roommates: the house-sitting lifestyle, explained

“Housesitting, according to Alanna Parrish, is a more responsible and independent task, though it is also more personal and satisfying”. To individuals gazing down at hikes in rent and wondering what exactly they are paying to be treated as such, the arrangement that Parrish has made comes as a glitch to the system: she resides in New York City and does not sign a lease. She is also not a homeowner, and does not reside with family. She is instead a full-time house sitter who tours other people houses so that one finishes as the other starts.

The video is filmed by Parrish who is a millennial who grew up in California and has lived in New York during the past 10 months, and she logs the routine on TikTok. One of the explainers has received more than 929,200 views and 78 100 likes, and people attempted to apply the logistics to their own lives- some referring to it as “genius” and others stating that it would induce anxiety.

She puts it in terms of a job description and rather as a lifestyle. The business is very simple: homeowners receive a certain degree of consistency and peace of mind during the time of traveling and Parrish receives the place to remain. She does not usually charge in case it is a two-way transaction particularly in cases where a sit already involves the fundamentals of maintaining a home well-kept and adhering to the standards of the household. “I make any place I go a home, said Parrish”.

The work occurs prior to there being a change of hands in key. Parrish claimed that she makes expectations beforehand, such as good Wi-Fi, cleanliness, and step-by-step directions, as the sit is based on transparency. That strategy is in line with long-established house-sitting advice: The more homeowners leave a written instruction manual that includes things like alarm systems, camera placement, trash collection schedules, appliance idiosyncrasy, and pet habits the more smooth the transaction is to all. The same checklists make it a point to highlight practical comfort such as clean towels, groceries place and clear boundaries between the rooms, visitors and things not to touch upon so that a sitter can settle down in a few minutes without guesswork. In a set up that is based on trust, there is less likely to be a shock and therefore, less trouble.

In the real world, the lifestyle is more of hard work rather than vacation. Parrish continues her usual working routine, takes care of pets and keeps the areas clean. She further indicated the load side of administration is very real: back-to-back planning, schedules, and back-ups. “I organize everything in advance and keep my calendar on schedule and also line up sits back-to-back as much as I can”, she said.

The downside is the obvious one, as well; no long-term consistency is in place. Parrish is a suitcase resident, who adjusts to any new place quite fast and sometimes struggles to fit timetables. When it occurs, she either rents a hotel or Airbnb or uses friends until the next sit takes place.

Still, she describes the trade-off as worth it for the flexibility, cost savings, and the chance to spend time with pets. “House sitting has given me a lifestyle that feels aligned with my values trust, flexibility, and meaningful connections,” Parrish said.
