A proposal story may be a few decades with a couple, even when the union is the larger story. The latest thoughts Chris Hemsworth expresses about asking Elsa Pataky to marry him place him in that other relationship land, that it was the right time to have done it, but not in the movie sense of the word.
In a Feb. 9 appearance on an Australian radio program, Hemsworth hinted at an engagement that was no longer an act and more of two individuals already in the same wavelength. We discussed the issue of getting married, I did not even ask her to get married, and it was like if not why not, why not? Hemsworth replied, and said, “So that kind of takes the air [out] of the buildup.” He, too, made a joke that Pataky has not forgotten it, and said, “I think she’s still thinking about it.”

In 2015, they moved out of the U.S. to Australia and the shift has been over and over again reported by each as a restart, not a withdrawal: less industry talk, more time to family routine and an environment to allow childhood to look like childhood.
In a more recent interview concerning their home life Hemsworth has said that they have built a set up that is centered around the outdoors: a farm with horses where the children daily surf and fish and ride motorbikes all day. In the same conversation, Pataky linked their rhythm of the family to nature, noting that they are in tune with the nature at all times – “We are in contact with nature all the time” – and said that city time is harder, since they are used to an open air and space base line.
That “why not?” engagement energy is another reflection of how Hemsworth has talked about the work that is needed when the initial burst is exhausted. In a December podcast interview, he talked of the worst seasons as the ones when family logistics eat the relationship. The complicated times have been when it’s all work, all kids all of a sudden a sort of non-existent us in the relationship you are just running a household or the work family schedule, he said. He identified the things that make them find that connection: “Getting out of all of that and simply spending time together the two of us, and making space, and making each other laugh.
He also condensed the section that is not glamorous on-screen but determines whether the joint venture will be a long-term affair. There is always the spark, that attraction, but it all boils down to friendship and companionship at the end of it all Hemsworth said.
At that, a ring hidden in a chocolate box reads rather less like a missed opportunity and more like a story of origins, where the dishonest stories did not prevail. Their catchphrase has never been perfection, it has been appearing, and tuning the instrument and ensuring the us does not get lost somewhere within the noise.
