Winter storm warnings: Up to 22 inches and whiteouts why staying inside matters

When the weather man predicts 22 inches of snow and the wind so strong as to blow the horizon away, what is it that the “stay-home order” keeps off? In sections of the West, winter storm alerts have pointed to a cold-season chain reaction we all know: heavy snow in the mountains, strong winds and falling visibility near blistering speed, making what would otherwise be a safe decision to travel, a risk-taker. Notices have reiterated in a number of locations that the situation may go wrong very fast, most especially in higher altitudes and exposed passes where the blowing snow may cause whiteouts.

The amount of snowfall in the state of California has been between feet of accumulation on the lower slopes and multi-foot levels on the higher altitudes. It has seen wind velocities up to 70 mph in certain regions and even the forecasters have warned that visibility may reduce to less than quarter-mile during the most severe of times. It is important since its not the depth of the snow that is the cause but the way in which the wind blows. Snow blowing can conceal the lane markings, small roads and it may not be easy to determine distance, velocity and even the margin of the road. With time, recurring heavy snow bursts may also restrict access of road workers and delay responsiveness to emergencies especially in hilly regions and mountain passes.

The mountainous terrain also has been geared towards important accumulation as well as multi-day amounts more than 2 feet above 9,000 feet and the winds are also capable of creating whiteness. The mountainous areas of Colorado have been not spared of such dangers as the Snow Squall Warning arrangements temporary explosions where an abrupt zero visibility and precipitous road conditions can occur even in a relatively brief period of time. Pockets of the southern area in Oregon have been receiving up to 2 feet with the effects reaching travel routes that are usually the winter lines of connection between communities.

It is one of the most difficult aspects of households since a warning does not only refer to driving, but can also mean failure and isolation. In the case of residents sheltering in place, it becomes a viable room by room approach to staying warm. The advice on how to keep the heat indoors during a power outage focuses on straightforward measures that will minimize the amount of heat lost: closing blinds and curtains, sitting in a single room, and sealing drafts at the bottom of a door with a towel. To make the ceiling fan run counterclockwise will assist in pushing down more hot air, which has been on the ceiling, and loose clothing will also act as insulation but will not limit the flow. In case of too low indoor temperatures, it is possible to move to emergency shelters, which is safer, particularly when conducting with older adults, infants, and people with medical conditions.

The warning, watches and advisories may sound similar at the time, but they indicate varying degrees of urgency. A warning is a winter storm issued when a serious dangerous mixture of snow, ice, and wind is present or is about to happen whereas a watch indicates the possibility of major winter climate in the next 48 hours. The lesson of everyday life is easy to learn: a warning is no time to expand plans, but shrink them, and errands are postponed, and less complex routes, and supplemental heat, food, and batteries are not only “nice to have” but also necessary. The safest miles of a storm of this kind are frequently the ones not travelled upon.
