“Known as a magic time of my life,” once Eric Dane, the cast member of the TV series, “Grey,” was asked about his years as Dr. Mark Sloan to comment on the role that has made a confident plastic surgeon one of the most memorable TV regulars of primetime, he said. Dane died at 53 and his family and publicist confirmed that he had ALS, or Lou Gehrig disease.
According to the statement made by Dane family members, the man passed away in the company of the closest people to him, among whom were his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia. He used his platform to highlight the realities of living with the disease on a daily basis and that the disease needed more research after publishing his diagnosis publicly in 2025, calling advocacy one of the ways in which he intended to continue moving forward.
ALS is a progressive form of nerve disorder that attacks nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, slowly interfering with muscle control. In a TV interview in 2025, Dane revealed his first signs by saying how he first felt weak in his right hand. He has described a meandering journey up experts until he was diagnosed with ALS, and how daily activities could change swiftly. There were also public updates that highlighted one important fact about the disease: the pace differs greatly and in many cases families are left with a moving target that reaches mobility, speech, swallowing as well as breathing.
Other viewers were introduced to Dane much earlier than to the episodes of the show “Grey’s Anatomy” when he appeared in TV in the 1990s and the early 2000s. It is however the Seattle Grace Hospital that made him a household name, when he came in as Mark Sloan and the interns of the show jokingly called him “McSteamy.” Mark was firstly brought into the story to break into the life of Derek Shepherd, but he outgrew the appearance of just a guest character, as he began to feature prominently in the plots that worked together on the themes of romance, friendship, and sorrow.
Emotional range was part of the attraction of the character. His friendship with Callie Torres developed into one of the friendships in the series which were most loving, and relationship with Lexie Grey became a sore longingly missing thing to the fans one which made the audiences change their perception of the swagger of the character. One of the last scenes that Mark shot shows Dane giving a monologue of sorts that continues to spread among the long time watchers: “If you love someone, you tell them. Even if you’re scared that it’s not the right thing. Even if you’re scared that it will cause problems. Even if you’re scared it will burn your life to the ground. You say it, and you say it loud. And then you go from there.”
Dane would then assume one more performance related role as Cal Jacobs on the show “Euphoria,” where he plays a father who is highly conservative and severe on the surface but harbors a deep personal crisis. He has also worked despite alterations in his health such as a recent appearance on “Brilliant minds” where he played a role of a firefighter with ALS.
Out of scripted scenes, the last year of Dane before going out of public focus focused on persistence. He talked of the desire to have time with his daughters and he mentioned why the ALS landscape has to be improved that there are barriers that families face in their quest to get care, trials, and support. The effects of his advocacy, as well as his screen legacy, creates a document of a performer who never went away up until the moment when he could no longer.
