Urgent Toyota Hybrid Recall: Park It Now, Fire Risk Cited

“The recall notice itself will tell you if it is safe to drive or not, or if it needs to be put outside,” said Consumer Reports’s chief automotive services manager, John Ibbotson. That guidance has unusual weight for owners of certain Toyota hybrids now covered by a stop-driving recall. The issue affects about 55,405 vehicles, including 2025–2026 Camry models and 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrids built during a limited production window in 2025, according to Toyota’s recall filing.

At the center of the problem is the inverter, a key part of the hybrid system that manages electricity moving from the battery to the electric motor. Toyota Motor Corporation said a bolt inside that assembly may not have been tightened correctly during manufacturing. If that bolt loosens, the vehicle can fail to start, lose motive power, or trigger warning lights. In more serious cases, the loose hardware can create a short circuit and heat buildup inside the inverter, creating a fire risk whenever the vehicle is on. For drivers, that means the concern is not limited to inconvenience. It reaches basic safety, especially if power drops while the vehicle is moving or if the car is parked near a home or garage.

The defect was traced to an assembly process tied to an incorrect torque setting, after Toyota began investigating in November 2025. By the time the company moved forward with the recall, it had identified 34 field technical reports and 15 warranty claims connected to the issue, according to the recall details released in December. The practical advice is straightforward.

Owners should check whether their vehicle is included, avoid driving it if the stop-driving instruction applies, and park it outdoors away from structures. Federal safety recalls are repaired at no charge, but this case has an added complication: Toyota said the remedy was still being developed when owners were first notified. That leaves some drivers in the difficult position of having a newer vehicle that should remain parked until dealerships receive repair instructions and parts. The company said owner notifications would begin by mid-February 2026, with a follow-up once the fix is ready.

VIN lookups remain the fastest way to confirm status. Affected drivers can use the federal recall lookup tool or Toyota’s own recall page, and keep the VIN available before contacting a dealer or customer support. Toyota also identifies this campaign under internal recall numbers 25TB15 and 25TA15.

This recall also arrives as Toyota is handling other unrelated safety actions, including a separate campaign covering more than 141,000 Prius-family vehicles for a rear door switch issue. That broader context matters because it underscores a simple point for hybrid and non-hybrid owners alike: recall notices are not routine mail to ignore. In this case, the warning is specific, the hazard is serious, and the safest response is to treat the vehicle as temporarily out of service until Toyota provides the repair.
