Seismic Clues Suggest California’s San Andreas Risk Is Growing

California’s most famous fault has a talent for making certainty look foolish. Scientists can measure strain, map creeping sections, and trace the scars of ancient ruptures, but they still cannot put a date on the next major San Andreas earthquake. The U.S. Geological Survey has been direct about that point: “Neither the USGS nor any other scientists have ever predicted a major earthquake.” What researchers can do, with growing precision, is identify the conditions that tend to matter most when a fault is storing energy instead of quietly releasing it.

One of the clearest signals is locked ground. The San Andreas Fault is not a single crack behaving the same way from end to end; it is a long fault system with sections that creep and sections that stay stuck. Where the fault is locked, the Pacific and North American plates keep trying to move past each other, and the mismatch accumulates as what geophysicists call slip deficit. Satellite radar studies have shown that several meters of motion may already be stored along parts of the southern fault, a reminder that the landscape can appear calm while strain keeps building out of sight.

That buried tension helps explain why paleoseismology draws so much attention. In trenches, lake sediments, and buried organic material, researchers can reconstruct older earthquakes well beyond written history. Along the southernmost San Andreas, evidence indicates large ruptures often recur about every 200 to 300 years, and the last one appears to have happened around the late 1600s. A broader comparison published in about 45% of California’s faults are overdue relative to their mean seismic cycle, though “overdue” does not mean imminent. It means the clock has passed an average, not that the alarm is set for tomorrow.

Small earthquakes also matter, though not in the way popular imagination prefers. Clusters of microearthquakes can reveal where one patch of a fault is slipping while the neighboring patch remains jammed. At Parkfield, instruments placed deep within the fault have recorded repeating tiny quakes that help scientists track this uneven motion. Research on foreshocks has also become more nuanced: rough faults can produce feedback between aseismic slip and small quakes, but foreshocks are only recognized after a larger event arrives. In other words, the pattern is scientifically useful without becoming a practical countdown.

New work has widened the frame beyond California alone. Sediment cores from offshore basins suggest the northern San Andreas and the Cascadia subduction zone may sometimes rupture in close succession, with three possible paired events in the last 1,500 years. Other researchers are examining whether fast-moving “supershear” ruptures could intensify shaking on straight strike-slip faults like the San Andreas, a concern that has pushed calls to update hazard scenarios. Even farther north, tiny low-frequency earthquakes near the Mendocino Triple Junction have helped reveal five moving pieces beneath Northern California, not just the three plates shown on simple diagrams. The practical message is less dramatic than a prophecy and more useful than one.

Hazard models remain the backbone of earthquake science. One major California forecast estimated a 7% chance of a magnitude 8 or larger quake within 30 years, and early warning systems such as ShakeAlert are built for seconds of notice after a rupture starts, not days before it begins. The San Andreas offers warning signs in the geological sense: locked segments, stored motion, overdue intervals, shifting microseismic patterns, and evidence from centuries of past breaks. What it does not offer is a reliable appointment time.
