Veteran Finds Missing Service Dog After Midnight Search in Jacksonville

Just after midnight, in a wooded stretch more than a mile from where she had last been seen, Scott Baker heard a beeping sound in the dark and kept moving toward it. Then the light caught a pair of eyes. After days of not knowing, that was the moment hope turned solid.

Baker, a Navy veteran from Iowa, had stayed in Jacksonville searching for Mal’i, the service dog he depends on every day. She had run off after a hit-and-run incident, and for several days he was left with the kind of uncertainty that can wear a person thin: not knowing where she was, not knowing what condition she might be in, and not being willing to leave without her.

That decision became the center of the story. Baker refused to go back to Iowa without Mal’i, and in Jacksonville, strangers began helping carry the search. Residents shared flyers, watched their neighborhoods, reported possible sightings, and passed along tips. What began as one man looking for one dog widened into something larger and more tender: a community trying to help him get back what he could not simply replace.

First Coast News reported that the breakthrough came just after midnight Thursday, when Baker received a text from an anonymous tipster. The message included a photograph and directions to a wooded area in Jacksonville. Baker went there carrying a remote connected to Mal’i’s collar, a tool that could trigger a beeping signal and give him a chance of finding her in the dark.

He heard it before he saw her. “I could hear it, and that just gave me so much joy that she’s here, she’s somewhere around here,” Baker said as he recalled the search.

A little later, the reunion arrived in a flash of recognition. “I shined the light and I saw her eyes, and that moment I said, ‘There she is,’” Baker said. Then came the detail that says almost everything about the bond between them: “She stood up and put her nose through the fence, she knew it was me.”

The relief was not only emotional. After Mal’i was found, she was taken for a full veterinary examination. Baker said she had no broken bones. She was reported to have a few cuts and minor lacerations, and she was expected to recover.

That mattered because Mal’i is not just a beloved dog in Baker’s life. She is his service dog, the one he has said he relies on daily. In earlier reporting by First Coast News during the search, Baker explained how closely tied she is to his day-to-day well-being. That dependence gave the search its urgency from the start. This was never only about a missing pet poster or a lost-and-found notice. It was about getting back a steady presence in a life that leaned on her.

There is something moving, too, in the way the search unfolded in a city that was not Baker’s home. He was from Iowa, stranded in uncertainty in Jacksonville, and the people around him answered with practical kindness. They watched, shared, texted, and kept the search alive long enough for the right tip to arrive. Baker later credited that collective effort for the ending he got.

Stories like this can easily turn loud in the retelling, but the strongest part is quieter than that. A man kept searching. Other people decided that mattered. A dog survived long enough to hear the signal that led him in. And in the dark, on the far side of several hard days, Baker saw her eyes and knew the worst had finally given way.

Have you ever adopted a dog with a story like this? We’d love to hear it.
