There is a strong temptation, with scenes like this, to write a whole history onto the dog: to decide he remembered a former family, or that the house belonged to some lost chapter of his life. But the facts do not go that far. It is not known whether he had ever been there before. It is not known whether anyone opened the door. It is not known what happened after he stood there waiting.
What can be said is smaller, and maybe more truthful for that reason. Dogs often lean hard on place, pattern, and routine.
