Swallowed Seawater Can Cause Dangerous Salt Toxicity in Dogs

A dog chasing waves or retrieving a toy in the surf can swallow seawater without deliberately drinking it. A few mouthfuls may cause stomach trouble, but a larger exposure can disrupt the dog’s fluid balance and develop into a medical emergency.

Dr. Anna Foreman, a veterinarian at Everypaw Pet Insurance, said the high salt concentration can cause gastrointestinal upset. “The high salt levels [in sea water] can lead to a gastrointestinal upset, or even ‘salt toxicity’ (neurological signs) if consumed in high enough levels,” Foreman said.

Vomiting is often the first warning sign. Other possible signs include diarrhea, depression, tremors, disorientation, shortness of breath and seizures.

Why seawater can affect the brain

Salt toxicosis, also called hypernatremia, occurs when sodium in the bloodstream becomes too concentrated. The Merck Veterinary Manual explains that rising sodium levels pull water out of cells, including cells in the brain.

This movement of water helps explain why excessive salt exposure may begin with vomiting or diarrhea and progress to neurological problems. Cornell University’s veterinary guidance identifies muscle tremors, disorientation and seizures as signs that excess salt may be affecting brain cells.

The danger depends partly on how much salt a dog consumes relative to body weight. Veterinary guidance indicates that clinical toxicity can occur after ingestion of about 2 to 3 grams of sodium chloride per kilogram of body weight, but owners generally cannot determine how much seawater a swimming dog swallowed.

Smaller dogs can reach a weight-based toxic amount after consuming less salt than larger dogs. Access to fresh water also matters: dogs have developed hypernatremia after swimming or playing in the ocean without fresh water available, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual.

Certain medical issues can add concern. American Kennel Club veterinary guidance notes that excess salt may be a greater issue for small dogs with metabolic conditions when fresh water is unavailable, while dogs with heart disease can experience fluid retention from excessive salty foods. Owners of dogs with existing health conditions should ask their veterinarian about appropriate beach precautions.

When to seek veterinary help

Signs can emerge within hours of a significant exposure. Vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, tremors, unusual behavior, poor coordination, disorientation, breathing difficulty or seizures after a beach outing warrant prompt veterinary advice.

A dog that is acutely ill, deteriorating quickly, disoriented, trembling or having seizures needs immediate veterinary attention. Cornell’s poisoning first-aid guidance advises calling a veterinarian or local emergency veterinary clinic immediately when poisoning is suspected.

Tell the veterinarian what the dog may have consumed, approximately how much, when the exposure occurred and the dog’s approximate weight. Do not use salt or another home remedy to induce vomiting. Vomiting should be induced only when a veterinarian or veterinary poison professional determines that it is appropriate.

Owners also should not attempt to correct suspected salt toxicity by forcing large quantities of water. Rapid changes in sodium concentration can be dangerous, and veterinary treatment may require controlled correction and close monitoring. Fresh water should be available during an outing, but a symptomatic dog needs professional direction rather than an improvised treatment.

Reducing exposure at the beach

Bring fresh drinking water and offer it before the dog enters the sea and during breaks. Cornell recommends that dogs begin a beach visit well hydrated, have fresh water continuously available and take regular breaks away from the water.

Watch closely for repeated swallowing while a dog swims, retrieves objects or plays in the surf. Move the dog away from the water if it begins drinking, and use a lead when reliable supervision is not possible.

After the outing, wash seawater from the dog’s coat. This reduces the opportunity for the dog to ingest additional salt while licking itself dry. Owners should also prevent sand consumption because Foreman warns that swallowed sand can cause an impaction requiring veterinary care.

Attentive supervision, fresh water and breaks can reduce exposure without removing beach play from a dog’s routine. Early recognition remains important because stomach symptoms can precede more serious neurological signs.
