About a week after entering Tracy Fosterling’s home, Koby began digging in an empty yard plot. For the three-legged Great Pyrenees puppy, that ordinary behavior marked a change after several uncertain days spent learning how to explore with a new gait.
Koby had recently undergone a leg amputation when he arrived at the foster home in early August 2026. The reason for the procedure has not been disclosed, and no longer-term medical or placement outcome is available.
Fosterling, an experienced dog and cat rescuer, found that Koby trusted her and his foster siblings immediately. Moving confidently through the environment took longer, however, as he adjusted to balancing and walking on three legs.
Digging does not establish that his physical recovery is complete. It does suggest that he had become comfortable enough to explore and engage in an instinctive canine activity, making the moment a useful reminder that emotional progress and physical adaptation may unfold together.
Protecting the remaining limbs
Dogs can develop compensatory ways of moving after an amputation, but that adaptation changes how force is distributed across the body. A 2024 pilot study of five dogs with a forelimb amputation found greater force and pressure demands on the remaining front limb than in five four-legged dogs of the same breed.
The amputee dogs maintained a comparable level of balance during standing, but the researchers said the increased load could contribute to overuse injuries. Because the study was small, limited to one breed and focused on forelimb amputees several months after surgery, its specific findings should not be applied to every three-legged dog. The broader concern about added strain supports careful activity management.
Traction is one practical place to start. Best Friends Animal Society guidance cited in Koby’s case recommends adding grip to floors for dogs that are unsteady, providing both physical and mental support. Veterinarian-reviewed care guidance for three-legged pets also identifies carpets, no-slip socks and booties as possible ways to improve footing on hard floors.
A newly adjusting dog may also benefit from temporarily putting away toys or activities that demand constant motion. That does not mean eliminating exercise. It means controlling the environment so the dog can move without repeated sharp turns, prolonged chasing or unnecessary slipping while becoming accustomed to the new gait.
Soft bedding can help dogs whose weight is distributed unevenly when they lie down. The 2024 pilot study’s authors also identified avoiding slippery surfaces and using ramps instead of stairs as environmental changes that may make movement safer.
Build activity gradually and watch fatigue
Exercise helps maintain muscle tone, which supports the back and remaining limbs. Three-legged pets may tire sooner than four-legged dogs, according to the veterinarian-reviewed care guidance, so walks and play should include opportunities to rest.
Activity should progress according to the individual dog’s condition and veterinary plan rather than a fixed schedule. Age, body weight and breed can affect how quickly a dog becomes accustomed to a three-legged gait, the 2024 study noted.
Owners should watch for difficulty keeping up, repeated attempts to slow down or unusually hard panting during increased exercise. Cornell University veterinary guidance advises stopping when a dog struggles with an activity increase and discussing the change with a veterinarian.
Falls, apparent pain, worsening fatigue or a new change in gait also warrant professional assessment rather than an assumption that the dog simply needs more practice. A veterinarian can evaluate whether the activity level and home setup remain appropriate for that individual dog.
Weight matters more when three limbs carry the load
Weight control is another central part of long-term mobility. A three-legged dog’s body weight is supported by three remaining limbs, and even a few additional pounds can create mobility problems over time.
Cornell recommends measuring food accurately and limiting calorie-dense treats as basic weight-management steps. Any weight-loss target or diet change should be developed with a veterinarian because nutritional needs vary by age, size, health and growth stage.
Koby’s first digging attempt does not resolve the physical demands of life on three legs. It does offer cautious evidence of an important early turn: after amputation, a move and several days of uncertainty, he was beginning to feel safe and capable enough to behave like a puppy in the yard.
