Vanessa Antonino cried as soon as she saw Flor. Twelve years had passed since the dog disappeared in Chicago, yet here she was again brought back to the woman who had carried her photograph and memory through more than a decade of change.
Flor was four years old when she vanished from Chicago’s North Side. At the time, Antonino was moving from place to place and sometimes living or staying in her car, with Flor beside her through that unsettled period. One day, Antonino went to work and returned to find the dog gone.
The years accumulated without an answer. Antonino had four children, and she showed them Flor’s picture, describing the missing dog as their long-lost big sister. She continued to think about Flor, even as the length of the separation made a reunion feel increasingly unlikely.
I had not fully given up on her, but it’s just like ‘so many years had passed,’ and I was like ‘I don’t think I’ll ever see her again,’ Antonino said.
Then severe weather caused extensive damage in Indiana, setting off a chain of events no one in Antonino’s family could have anticipated. A woman from Louisiana who was helping with storm damage found Flor near roads in Gary. Concerned that the dog could be struck, she got Flor to safety, and Flor was taken to Griffith Animal Control.
Microchip Hunters became involved after Flor reached animal control. The organization works on difficult identification cases, including microchips connected to outdated owner information. In Flor’s case, the phone number associated with her chip was no longer current, according to local coverage of the reunion.
Despite that dead end, Microchip Hunters determined Flor’s identity and contacted the Evanston Animal Shelter about her whereabouts. A volunteer then transported Flor from Gary to Evanston, closing the physical distance that had opened between dog and family 12 years earlier.
When Antonino arrived, the long wait collapsed into a single moment. I broke down completely. It was like she was back with me. A piece of my heart was back with me, she said.
Why current microchip details matter
Flor’s return illustrates both the lasting value of a microchip and the difficulty created by outdated records. A chip can still offer an identifying trail years after a dog disappears, but the process becomes harder when an associated telephone number no longer reaches the owner.
Officials at Griffith Animal Control and the Evanston Animal Shelter urged families to microchip their pets and keep their contact information current. That means treating a move, a changed phone number or another change in contact details as a reason to update the information connected to the chip not waiting until a pet is missing.
Flor is not the only dog whose implanted identification remained useful across years and state lines. In another case, a 6-year-old dog named Charlie Sue was found in Wisconsin after being missing from her Pennsylvania family for two years. Initial attempts to reach the owner were unsuccessful, but Wisconsin Humane Society staff eventually made contact. The family then traveled 600 miles to bring her home, according to details of Charlie Sue’s reunion.
For owners, the practical lesson is simple: have a pet microchipped before an accident or escape occurs, and make sure the associated contact details continue to lead somewhere. If a phone number or address changes, updating those records preserves the connection between the identification beneath a dog’s skin and the family waiting at home.
No one involved has explained where Flor spent the missing years, and her return does not fill that silence. What it restores is something smaller and more immediate: Flor is no longer only the dog in an old photograph shown to four children. She is back with Antonino, the piece of her heart that found its way home.
