Eight puppies were gathered near a gas-station dumpster in northern Alabama when Brendon Leslie pulled in for an unplanned stop. He had been traveling to Mississippi. Instead, he found himself responsible for a litter less than 2 months old. “I thought that was crazy that these eight puppies were chilling at a dumpster at a gas station,” Leslie said of the discovery.
No precise location was identified, and nothing is known about who left the puppies there. What is clear is the route Leslie took next: He brought all eight across the state line to a local veterinarian in Tupelo, Mississippi, where they received quick checkups and vaccinations.
Then the trip grew longer. Leslie drove the entire litter to his home in Cape Coral, Florida. In the course of one unexpected journey, the puppies moved through three states from the place where they were found in Alabama, to veterinary care in Mississippi, and finally to Leslie’s home in Florida.
Seven of the puppies eventually found homes. The available information does not identify the adopters or explain how those placements were selected, but every member of the litter received a permanent placement.
What to do when puppies are found alone
A litter beside a roadside business can look plainly abandoned, but a traveler still needs to involve local professionals. The Animal Humane Society recommends checking for identification, arranging a microchip scan through a veterinary office or other appropriate facility, and contacting local animal control to see whether a matching lost-pet report has been filed.
If the animals can be moved safely, a shelter or veterinarian can help determine the next step. If they appear injured, ill, or unsafe to handle, local animal services should be contacted rather than risking an improvised rescue. Rules for reporting found animals and required stray-hold periods differ by jurisdiction, so the appropriate local shelter or animal-control agency should be notified promptly.
Young puppies also need veterinary assessment rather than assumptions about their condition. Their age, vaccination history and possible exposure to parasites or infectious disease may be unknown. Puppy-care guidance from Best Friends Animal Society says puppies should receive an early physical examination and fecal test for intestinal parasites, with vaccinations generally beginning at 6 to 8 weeks. A veterinarian should determine the appropriate schedule for each puppy.
Vaccination is not an instant shield. The American Animal Hospital Association’s canine guidelines emphasize individualized recommendations based on a dog’s age, history, lifestyle and risk factors. Anyone who finds very young puppies should consult a veterinarian about illness, pain, declining condition or other urgent concerns.
Transport brings another consideration: protecting both the rescued animals and other dogs. San Diego Humane Society advises keeping an unfamiliar stray separated from resident animals when providing temporary care. For organized relocation, Best Friends recommends biosecurity measures such as hard-sided crates, adequate ventilation, careful cleaning and limiting contact between newly arrived animals and the broader population.
Those precautions matter because puppies may not yet be reliably protected from disease. The practical goal is simple: contain them safely, minimize unnecessary exposure and get professional help as soon as possible.
For Leslie’s litter, the final turn came with the only puppy who was not placed elsewhere. His name is Elvis, and he became a permanent member of Leslie’s own dog pack.
