Priscilla Presley Adopts 10-Year-Old Toby, Once Starving on the Streets

A fluffy white dog rested in Priscilla Presley’s lap as she rubbed his ears. Toby, now 10, had traded street life for a place in her home and, Presley says, a spot in her bed. The quiet scene marked a stark reversal for a dog she described as once starving and without proper care.

Presley learned about Toby from someone who knew of her love for dogs and other animals. Much of his history remains unknown. She does not know how he came to be on the streets or whether he had run away from a previous home.

“He was not taken care of. He was starving,” Presley said of his earlier condition.

What happened before Toby reached her may remain a blank, but Presley said patience helped him settle after his rescue. She now describes him as loving, attentive and well-behaved. Although he is a senior, she said he does not behave like a 10-year-old dog.

He is adjusted. He is a gem. He has been so good, Presley said.

No shelter or rescue organization has been identified in connection with Toby, and details about his rescue date, veterinary care and time in Presley’s home have not been made public. His recovery and adjustment are known through Presley’s account.

A New Senior Dog Meets the Dog Already Home

Toby’s arrival also changed life for Boz, Presley’s 15-year-old rescue dog. Presley acknowledged the uncertainty that can accompany bringing a new dog into a household with an established pet. She said the two senior dogs accepted each other and now get along well.

That outcome is heartening, but dog-to-dog introductions should move at the pace of the individuals involved. Best Friends Animal Society recommends beginning with space between dogs and watching for relaxed behavior before allowing closer contact. Stiffening, low growling, avoidance and hard stares are signs that the dogs need more distance rather than a forced greeting.

For older dogs, pacing also means respecting physical comfort and energy. Ohio State University’s guidance for introducing a new dog advises considering the resident dog’s needs, particularly when that dog is older or has health problems. Early meetings should be supervised, and newly introduced dogs should not be left alone together until they are comfortable with each other.

Inside the home, food, chews, toys and preferred resting places can become points of tension. Feeding dogs in separate rooms at first, offering more than one water bowl and comfortable bed, and supervising access to valued items can reduce pressure while each dog learns the new routine. If one dog repeatedly blocks the other from a person, room or resting place, calm separation and redirection are preferable to punishment.

Adjustment does not follow a single timetable. Some dogs need repeated introductions or breaks in separate spaces. Others may appear comfortable quickly but still benefit from close supervision as their routines develop. A qualified trainer experienced in dog-to-dog interactions can help when the dogs cannot relax around each other or when their behavior raises safety concerns.

For Toby and Boz, Presley says that careful beginning has become peaceful companionship. One dog arrived with years of history no one could explain; the other already knew the rhythms of the home. Now, at 10 and 15, they share those rhythms together.
