Officer Follows Suzie’s Tiny Barks to a Moving Beer Box

Tiny barks carried through the darkness at the entrance to a wooded park. When a Cook County animal control officer followed them, a discarded Bud Light box seemed to move in the flashlight beam and a small brown nose poked through an opening.

The officer had been responding to a late-night call in Willow Springs, Illinois, when the sound prompted a change of course. Inside the box was a tiny, wire-haired female dog, trapped and trembling. She barked continuously and reacted defensively as the officer approached.

The location added urgency. The Abandoned of Cook County described the wooded site as being near a dark road in an area where coyotes hunt. Whatever had happened before the officer arrived remains unknown, but the dog’s immediate predicament was plain: She was confined outdoors at night and unable to leave the box on her own.

The officer lifted her out and drove her to South Suburban Humane Society. There, the little dog received a name Suzie and her recovery began.

From the box to a quiet place to recover

An intake examination revealed that Suzie was suffering from a heavy flea infestation even though she wore a flea collar. Suzie was COVERED in fleas. Because of that, she is dealing with skin issues and hair loss, a South Suburban Humane Society representative said.

Shelter staff bathed Suzie and carefully combed her coat to give her some relief. She then slept overnight in a kennel. By the next day, caregivers said she was doing better.

That progress did not mean she had instantly put the experience behind her. Nearly a week after the rescue, Suzie was still somewhat fearful, though the shelter reported that she was doing well. Staff estimated her age at approximately 8 years.

After several days of treatment and care, Suzie was considered ready to leave the shelter for a foster home. The move gave her a place to rest and continue recovering outside the kennel environment. It was another step forward, but not yet a permanent placement: The shelter hoped she would eventually be adopted, while her confirmed status remained that of a dog in foster care.

Suzie’s skin trouble also underscores why removing an abandoned dog from immediate danger is only the first stage of rescue. Fleas had already been associated with her hair loss and skin problems, requiring hands-on care after she reached safety. Other rescued dogs can arrive with very different needs, and their individual recoveries may unfold over days, weeks or longer.

A case documented by Pasado’s Safe Haven, for example, involved three severely neglected dogs who needed careful nutritional rehabilitation, physical therapy and long-term medical support. Their circumstances were far more severe than the condition reported for Suzie, but their experience illustrates a broader reality: Reaching safety can begin a long process rather than complete it.

A separate rescue followed a similarly faint trail. In Missouri, Kelsey Petko heard unusual sounds near a dumpster and found a small puppy inside a diaper box. An animal control officer brought the puppy, later named Porky, to CARE STL. He was estimated to be about two months old and initially could not stand, but he gained enough strength to do so within weeks. His rescue was also set in motion because someone stopped to investigate a sound.

For Suzie, that attentive pause came from an officer who let tiny barks interrupt the night’s route. The cardboard box was left behind; Suzie was not. Now, in foster care, an older little dog has a quiet place to sleep while healing continues.
