Melissa McCarthy Steps Out in NYC, Showing Off a Nearly 100-Pound Change

What happens when a “dramatic transformation” is less about a quick fix and more about finally stepping off the mental hamster wheel?

The New York City appearance of Melissa McCarthy was a fresh picture of a long and gradual shift in wellness that has developed over the years. Late Show with Stephen Colbert invited the actress, 55, to the show in a low-cut black satin dress, topped with a bright blue flowery coat and a matching tote, an outfit that made it easy to see how obviously her body had changed. Her estimates of weight loss dwelt on estimates, although a number of 75 to 95 pounds has been most frequently mentioned.

It was not in Manhattan that the focus on her body began. When McCarthy went back to Saturday Night Live to host an episode, her sixth appearance in thePolysemy it was more about her appearance than her performance. Reactions on the internet were as low as awe to all out celebrations. “I’m really impressed by Melissa’s weight loss progress,” one commenter wrote, while another posted, “So Glad to see Melissa McCarthy back on the ‘SNL’ Stage, and She Looks Fabulous!” A separate fan summed it up more bluntly: “Melissa McCarthy looks GOOD!!!! And remains the modern queen of physical comedy, we love to see it.”

To McCarthy, it has been the means, the attitude of it.

With the growing speculation in recent years around celebrities losing weight, tending to turn into presumations about medication use, McCarthy has several times returned to routine, movement, and slower speed. She has explained how she has incorporated fitness into her life through exercise that has incorporated Pilates and boxing and she has talked about the need to go beyond severe restriction. That decision is even heavier considering that she, too, has provided an admonitory example of her past, a liquid diet monitored by a doctor but which led to rapid weight loss but left her feeling drained. “I’d never do that again. I felt starved and crazy half the time,” starved and crazy, she told People in 2023.

Her most consistent through-line, though, is psychological. On air, she explained that progress came when she stopped treating her body like a project that needed constant surveillance. “I finally said [to myself], ‘Oh for God’s sake, stop worrying about it,’ and it may be the best thing I’ve ever done,” she said during a TV appearance. “I truly stopped worrying about [my weight].” She added, “I stopped over-analyzing, over-thinking, over-doing anything… I just stopped constantly being worried about it.”

Home-based support has also been included. McCarthy has attributed her husband, Ben Falcone, as having made her feel grounded in her years of commentary by the public about her size. “Because he’s so constantly loving and kind. And funny and the weirdest human I know, to be honest,” she said in a 2023 interview. She also described reaching a more settled kind of self-acceptance in adulthood: “Somewhere in my 30s, I was like ‘I’m okay with who I am.’ And if someone wasn’t thrilled with that, that’s okay too.”

Even her open, humorous confessions such as falling asleep with full makeup and going to bed like a corpse are met with a thud as part of the same story: not a life that is edited to make it look good, but one that is organized enough to continue going on.
