A northern-lights viewing window is opening unusually far south, and the best chance comes after most people have gone to bed. Across parts of the northern United States, the aurora borealis may become visible from late Wednesday into early Thursday as geomagnetic activity strengthens around the spring equinox. The main viewing zone stretches from Alaska to New England, with some southern reach into parts of Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Oregon when conditions cooperate. For skywatchers, the practical message is simple: dark skies matter as much as the forecast.

The strongest viewing hours are typically 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., though aurora can appear earlier or later when the sky is dark. Forecast guidance from late March 19 geomagnetic readings shows activity building into levels that can push the lights beyond their usual northern range. March also has a reputation among aurora watchers for delivering outsized displays because the equinox period often aligns Earth’s magnetic field more favorably with incoming solar wind.
That seasonal edge is one reason aurora season keeps drawing attention well beyond Alaska. The northern lights form when charged particles from the sun collide with gases high in Earth’s atmosphere, producing glowing bands and curtains that can appear green, pink, purple, and sometimes red. The display does not need to sit directly overhead to be visible. According to the Space Weather Prediction Center, it can be seen from as far as 1,000 km away when the aurora is bright enough and the horizon is clear. That detail explains why residents well south of the Canadian border sometimes catch a faint arc or shifting glow low in the northern sky rather than a full dome of color above them.
The most reliable states remain the ones closest to the auroral oval: Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska. Some northern sections of neighboring states can also enter the picture during stronger storms. In the continental U.S., places with broad northern horizons and minimal light pollution tend to perform best, especially around the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, northern Minnesota, and open stretches of the Dakotas and Montana.
Visibility, however, is often decided by ordinary things. Cloud cover can erase the show. Porch lights, highway corridors, and city glow can flatten faint color into a gray haze. A dark viewing area, a clear northern horizon, and patience often matter more than constantly changing apps. Mike Bettwy of NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center has advised viewers to “get away from city lights, look north, and give your eyes about 20 minutes to adjust to the dark.” He also noted that smartphone cameras may catch aurora detail the naked eye misses.
That advice has become more useful during the current Solar Cycle 25 peak phase, when elevated solar activity has increased the odds of stronger displays reaching farther south. For many viewers, the difference between missing the moment and seeing it comes down to stepping outside at the right hour, away from town, and looking north long enough for the sky to change.
